True Freedom in Christ – A Reflection on the Fourth of July

Scripture: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” – John 8:36 (NKJV)

As we celebrate Independence Day, the Fourth of July, we’re reminded of the incredible gift of freedom that has been hard-won through the sacrifices of many. We wave flags, enjoy fireworks, and give thanks for the liberties we enjoy as Americans: freedom of speech, religion, and the pursuit of happiness, etc.

Yet, as precious as our national freedom is, there is a deeper, eternal freedom found only in Christ. Jesus said, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). This is not freedom granted by governments or protected by constitutions, it is the kind of freedom that liberates the soul.

In Christ, we are set free from the bondage of sin, from the weight of guilt, and from the fear of death. This freedom is not dependent on circumstances, political systems, or even our own efforts. It’s a gift of grace, secured by the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and entered into through obedient faith—expressed through our repentance and baptism, where we are buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4).

Galatians 5:1 reminds us, “Stand firm, therefore, in the freedom with which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of slavery.” As believers, our spiritual independence began the day we were born again of “water and the Spirit” (John 3:3-8). This transformation occurred when we were baptized into Christ (1 Peter 3:21) having our sins washed away.

So as we celebrate America’s freedom today, let us also take time to thank God for the far greater freedom we have in Christ.
